FDA walks back claim that Taco Bell lettuce supplier Taylor Farms was source of ‘explosive diarrhea’ parasite

https://nypost.com/2026/07/19/business/fda-taylor-farms-had-false-positive-after-test-pinned-explosive-diarrhea-parasite-on-taco-bell-lettuce-supplier/

The FDA is walking back its initial claims that a Taco Bell lettuce supplier is responsible for sickening hundreds of Americans with explosive diarrhea, saying the original test results were a “false positive.”

The stunning reversal comes after the agency double-checked a lettuce sample, which found that the leafy green supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico did not have traces of Cyclospora – the parasite that causes the crappy condition.

“FDA laboratory experts re-reviewed the sample results and have concluded that the finding does not represent true amplification and should be considered a false positive,” the agency said on its website Sunday.

Nobody thought to double-check BEFORE announcing definitive results on such a profoundly important piece of evidence that 100+ million people are relying on for health safety, even life threatening information????

Let's see now.................what would drastically increase the chances for massive blunders like this to take place.

AI Overview

Under Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the FDA and other health agencies underwent massive restructuring and downsizing. These changes resulted in thousands of layoffs and high-level resignations. Key aspects of these FDA actions include:
  • Mass Layoffs: The HHS enacted significant job cuts across the FDA. Thousands of employees across policy and administrative offices were let go.
  • Ousted Leadership: Key agency leaders were pushed out, notably Peter Stein (Director of the Office of New Drugs) and Peter Marks (head of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research).
  • Food Safety Department: The agency faced significant reorganization in its food safety wing, which led to the resignation of the FDA's food safety chief due to the loss of critical personnel.
  • Reversal Challenges: While some administrative personnel were asked to return due to data and layoff errors, the broader regulatory environment saw fundamental changes.
Industry watchers and watchdogs have closely monitored these FDA Layoffs and HHS restructuring efforts, which caused concern among former commissioners regarding the FDA's institutional knowledge. For updates on specific departmental operations, consult the U.S. Food and Drug Administration official resources.

Gee, who would have ever guessed that an anti science, anti vax nut case firing/replacing thousands of competent, trained in science people that don't believe in his anti science, nut case theories  would hurt the competence of the departments and people he oversees.

Investigation of 5-State Outbreak of Cyclospora Illnesses: Iceberg Lettuce (July 2026)

Do not eat recalled iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico. FDA’s investigation is ongoing.

https://www.fda.gov/food/outbreaks-foodborne-illness/investigation-5-state-outbreak-cyclospora-illnesses-iceberg-lettuce-july-2026

Current Update

July 19, 2026

FDA is providing an update regarding the sample of lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico which was reported positive on July 18, 2026. Due to the complexity in detection of Cyclospora, FDA laboratory experts re-reviewed the sample results and have concluded that the finding does not represent true amplification and should be considered a false positive. Information about the sample has been removed from the July 18, 2026, update below. FDA has notified Taylor Farms and continues working with the firm to ensure product implicated in this outbreak has been removed from the market. FDA and state partners continue to collect and analyze product samples. As of July 19, 2026, there are no confirmed positive sample results for product testing for Cyclospora.

+++++++++++++

This was an inexcusable blunder!

However, one would think that they had at least hundreds of samples to confirm results and numerous from each source. This was not just a local case of something minor. That's why it's mind boggling to come out with definitive statements with non definitive, non confirmed lab results.

Taco Bell could have a legit lawsuit of XXX millions coming up for REAL damages and tax payers will foot the bill for this incompetence!

Ohio residents sue Taco Bell, say they got cyclospora after eating at restaurants

The cyclospora outbreak lawsuits have begun

https://www.businessinsider.com/cyclosporiasis-diarrhea-outbreak-lawsuits-taco-bell-taylor-farms-2026-7

On July 16, health officials linked shredded lettuce sold at US-based Taco Bell restaurants to the cyclosporiasis outbreak.

Within hours, the lawsuits began.

At least four lawsuits have been filed in state and federal courts, as cases linked to the microscopic parasite continue to spread across multiple states. Taylor Farms, a supplier of Taco Bell, said last week it was recalling its iceberg lettuce sourced from Mexico.

On Sunday, the Food and Drug Administration said tests linking Taylor Farms to the outbreak should be considered a false positive. There are no confirmed positive results for cyclospora, the agency said.

FDA still focused on lettuce supplier as source of parasite, despite faulty test result

https://apnews.com/article/cyclospora-lettuce-taco-bell-cdc-fda-77f2b6db56fbeddcae045a03ccf122c4

Food safety investigators often cannot draw a direct biological connection between recalled produce and outbreaks of foodborne illness. Some common tests used to check for food poisoning have not been geared to detect cyclospora. Technicians aren’t able to grow the parasite in labs, making it hard to draw evidence from contaminated produce.

I have been saying privately for many years that the most effective form of terrorism against the United States would be bio-terrorism attack on our food supply.

I really have no idea whether this has origins related to that but think about how easy this would be!

I won't pass on how easy this would be because:

1. I don't want to give a deranged reader any ideas

2. I don't want to be investigated for passing on information that gives a deranged reader any ideas

When I pass on important messages here on personal behavior to strive for, it comes in threads like this:

Here's the truth about what makes a good human being:
