Jean,

I couldn't get the video to play.

In September 1985, I flew into Hurricane Gloria with the National Hurricane Center.

They had 3 planes, doing 8 hour shifts.

As they were loading up our plane with equipment, we noted the plane that had the shift before us parked just off the runway/close by...........getting repaired.

A lightning strike and crazy turbulence  had done some serious damage and that plane had to return early.

The hurricane had been 140 mph during that previous flight but weakened to less than 120 mph for us.

The internet says the peak winds were 145 mph on September 25, 1985. That's also the date on the very nicely done framed certificate the NHC gave me later that year for being on the flight.

For sure, that happened on the previous flight because everybody on our flight was talking about what the guys on the previous flight reported. They were getting tossed all over the place and oddly as it may seem, we were bummed that the hurricane had weakened.

I was married a month earlier and my wife was petrified. I'm serious when stating I wasn't scared in the least bit.

In the previous 30+ years, every plane that went out came back and these guys were trained to fly in the most insane  weather conditions. I was so friggin pumped with adrenaline and excitement that I got almost 0 sleep the night before and after.

Then, I flew back to Evansville and had to go on the air to talk about it and my brain was toast.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Gloria

Hurricane Gloria was a powerful hurricane that caused significant damage along the east coast of the United States and in Atlantic Canada during the 1985 Atlantic hurricane season. It was the first significant tropical cyclone to strike the northeastern United States since Hurricane Agnes in 1972 and the first major storm to affect New York City and Long Island directly since Hurricane Donna in 1960. Gloria was a powerful Cape Verde hurricane originating from a tropical wave on September 16 in the eastern Atlantic Ocean. After remaining a weak tropical cyclone for several days, Gloria intensified into a hurricane on September 22 north of the Lesser Antilles. During that time, the storm had moved generally westward, although it turned to the northwest due to a weakening of the ridge. Gloria quickly intensified on September 24, and the next day reached peak winds of 145 mph (233 km/h).

We have a cockapoo, Macy right now. Most awesome of the 6 dogs we've had. Lost our cat, Juno earlier this year after 16 years.

That pretty old for such a big dog.

i was feeding our mastiff egg yellows every morning and caused her to get too heavy.

after she got severe  arthritis, I put her on a diet to lose 30 lbs to help her get around Better.

she died, just like 1 of our German Shepard s of intestinal contortion.

Their intestines suddenly just twist and cut off the blood supply and within an Hour they were dead.

I was able to pick up the shephard and rush him to the vet but it was too late. With the mastiff, she was too big to carry.

They would have had to do emergency surgery to cut them open.

Hvaldimir is a male[1]beluga whale that fishermen near Hammerfest in northern Norway noticed in April 2019 wearing a camera harness. After being freed from the harness, the whale remained in the area and appeared used to humans. Speculation that he had been trained by Russia as a spy whale led to his being dubbed Hvaldimir, a pun on the Norwegianhval (whale) and Vladimir Putin. He reappeared off southwest Sweden in May 2023, traveling abnormally fast.

How Dangerous Are Black Bears?

https://bear.org/how-dangerous-are-black-bears/

Black bears have killed 61 people across North America since 1900.  This no longer worries me. My chances of being killed by a domestic dog, bees, or lightning are vastly greater. My chances of being murdered are 60,000 times greater.  One of the safest places a person can be is in the woods.

I would argue with the accuracy of those stats but despite the embellishment, he's making good points.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ball_lightning

Ball lightning is a rare and unexplained phenomenon described as luminescent, spherical objects that vary from pea-sized to several meters in diameter. Though usually associated with thunderstorms,[1] the observed phenomenon is reported to last considerably longer than the split-second flash of a lightning bolt, and is a phenomenon distinct from St. Elmo's fire.

Some 19th-century reports[2][3] describe balls that eventually explode and leave behind an odor of sulfur. Descriptions of ball lightning appear in a variety of accounts over the centuries and have received attention from scientists.[4] An optical spectrum of what appears to have been a ball lightning event was published in January 2014 and included a video at high frame rate.[5][6] Laboratory experiments have produced effects that are visually similar to reports of ball lightning, but how these relate to the supposed phenomenon remains unclear.[7][8]

Scientists have proposed a number of hypotheses to explain reports of ball lightning over the centuries, but scientific data on ball lightning remain scarce. The presumption of its existence has depended on reported public sightings, which have produced inconsistent findings. Owing to the lack of reproducible data, the existence of ball lightning as a distinct physical phenomenon remains unproven

Earth's Rarest Lightning Finally Caught on Camera | Transient Luminous Events

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-SZryVqFHo

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upper-atmospheric_lightning

Upper-atmospheric lightning and ionospheric lightning are terms sometimes used by researchers to refer to a family of short-lived electrical-breakdown phenomena that occur well above the altitudes of normal lightning and storm clouds. Upper-atmospheric lightning is believed to be electrically induced forms of luminous plasma. The preferred usage is transient luminous event (TLE), because the various types of electrical-discharge phenomena in the upper atmosphere lack several characteristics of the more familiar tropospheric lightning.

Transient luminous events have also been observed in far-ultraviolet images of Jupiter's upper atmosphere, high above the altitude of lightning-producing water clouds.[

First of all , Mike , I had no idea there are those many types of owls.

And secondly , I wouldn't have guessed any of those sounds were made by owls - didn't recognize more then 2.

Thanks

Thanks a ton, John!

There are a limitless number of incredible things/creatures in our world!

We have a couple of Barred owls in the woods in back of our house.

I copied a unique recording of what they sound like. There are dozens of Barred owl recordings on the internet but most of them don't have the very crazy call that they only do when there's 2 of them close to each other.

That's why I picked this one.

You'll hear the first episode of the owl doing its crazy noise just after 50 seconds. Another more lengthy example starts around 1:55 seconds.

I'll have to find out what that means in Barred owleeze.

My wife is scared when she's out back and hears them behaving like that. I spend massive amounts of time outside and have enjoyed listening to that wild calling many hundreds of times!

Including earlier tonight and also over the weekend, which was actually what inspired me to make the first owl post.

If you've never listened to a Barred Owl doing this, you're in for a huge treat!
