Hurricanes need an ocean temperature of at least 80 Deg. F to form............and lots other things besides that to be favorable.

Have hurricane numbers gone up?

Intensity of hurricanes?

OK, lets bombard you with data on hurricanes. Please enjoy the enlightenment. Comments and questions are much appreciated:

One problem with historical trends is that before satellites, there were many hurricanes in the middle of the ocean that we could not monitor, weak ones that we never knew existed and strong ones that we never got top winds speeds of like we can today.

Apples to apples for hurricanes is "land falling". Hurricanes that hit land in the past........we know a great deal about.

Were these 3 hurricanes at the same time last Summer unprecedented as we heard?

No, here is a satellite pix of 1998 with 4 hurricanes at the same time:

There obviously were major hurricanes that hit the US before the recorded times frames above that we don't know much about. However, we do know a few things about the hurricane season of 1780.  28,000 people were killed!!!!

1780 Atlantic hurricane season - Wikipedia

The 1780 Atlantic hurricane season ran through the summer and fall in 1780. The 1780 season was extraordinarily destructive, and was the deadliest Atlantic hurricane ...

What makes that even more interesting is that in 1780, the planet was still rebounding from what we call "The Little Ice Age" when global temperatures were the coldest in the last 2,000 years. So much colder global temperatures and oceans did NOT stop catastrophic hurricanes from forming. A warmer planet, theoretically should lead to more intense hurricanes. That has NOT happened so far.

Thanks for al the data.  I know I keep hearing "predictions" that each year will be worse than the last, or the worst ever....   But that hasn't happened yet.
