African Americans may be dying from COVID-19 at a higher rate. Better data is essential, experts say.

"Our ability to fully understand and confront this pandemic requires and demands that we obtain racial data now," one advocate said.

"In Michigan, where African Americans comprise 14 percent of residents but 41 percent of people who have died from the coronavirus"

There is no question that blacks are getting hit harder. 1 big reason is that they live in the big cities that are getting hit the hardest.

However, that's a very dishonest stat that they site above. That's my home state and I've been following the stats closely.

Here's the proof:

There are 85 counties in the state of Michigan. They report the % black population for all those counties as 14%. What they don't tell you is that 95% of all the deaths are coming from the Detroit area, where people are close together in the urban setting............... and not by coincidence, most of the black population in the state of Michigan lives.

For instance, the county that I grew up in, Wayne County MI has 402 of the 845 deaths for the entire state. 1 county and almost as many deaths as the other 84 counties combined. It's because the people in Wayne County are smashed closer together than in rural Michigan. Houses have just enough space for a narrow driveway, if that between them.  Oh, and 40.5% of the population in Wayne county MI is black.............which is close to the 41% number for people dying of CV being black in the state.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayne_County,_Michigan

It's absurd to compare a  CV death  stat for blacks that comes from, mainly a city relationship with a non CV stat(population) based on a STATE relationship for blacks.

They must have known this to exaggerate their point.

Blacks also have more medical issues(which is why their life spans are less than whites).

COVID-19 is taking out the elderly and people with medical issues at a much higher rate.

Because they comprise a higher % of the poor/inner city population, they are at risk for EVERYTHING bad, from bad health, to bad education, to bad job opportunities and  generally can't afford the same health care as people with high incomes and especially do not take care of their health(don't exercise or eat healthy foods).

So of course they will be suffering consequences from these, now impossible to control dynamics,  when it comes to their risk for dying from COVID-19. Actually, quite similar to the poor white people that live in Wayne county too.

1. They live in the high population communities with the highest COVID-19 rates (increased exposure)

2. They have more health compromising issues(diabetes, high blood pressure/heart disease....etc)

Not  because of their race or discrimination being imposed on them because they are black. Because of WHERE they live, what their health is like and other items that would affect white people the same way under the same conditions.

No, the information is not being held back because there is some sort of cover up of racial discrimination or because the government doesn't want us to know that more blacks are dying than whites.  I have several family members that work in the health care industry in Wayne County, including a nephew that's a respiratory therapist working overtime, risking his life to save lives and its bullsheet for anybody to suggest that skin color has anything to do with how they and the rest of the medical community are treating patients that need emergency care for COVID-19 in Detroit.......or anywhere else.

Alot of these people are blacks. Some have no health insurance(like poor whites). But they go to hospitals.........and are not turned away. They are admitted into ICU units and use ventilators, that they will never be able to pay for, just like rich whites that can pay for them. NOBODY there is being treated with less respect or given inferior medical care because they are black.

More blacks are dying, its true and for the  reasons stated above that we can't control at the moment.   Knowing how many more blacks are dying is not going to change the way they are being treated 1 iota right now,  though I agree, we should get those stats. We can use them to possibly understand more about the virus but they will not stop discrimination of blacks with regards to the treatment they receive for COVID-19 because they are not being discriminated against, other than isolated cases which will never be eliminated.

We are trying to give every patient, regardless of age, gender or race the best treatment/assistance available based on where they are right now.

It's pathetic that the MSM wants to suggest a potential factor being discrimination because of race.

These health care workers and the system are hero's saving lives right now, while risking theirs. We don't need this sort of crapola that takes away from recognizing their incredible altruistic, effort to save ALL lives.

Why some people of color say they won't wear homemade masks

https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/07/us/face-masks-ethnicity-coronavirus-cdc-trnd/index.html

"For many black people, deciding whether or not to wear a bandana in public to protect themselves and others from contracting coronavirus is a lose-lose situation that can result in life-threatening consequences either way," Moore said. "

"Not wearing a protective bandana goes against CDC recommendations and increases the risk of contracting Covid-19, but wearing one could mean putting their lives at risk of getting shot or killed because of racially-biased targeting."

Confused on whether you need a mask? Dr. Sanjay Gupta has the answer

"Racial profiling by law enforcement in the US has been documented by studies like the Stanford Open Policing Project, which examined 100 million traffic and pedestrian stops from 2011 to 2017 and found that officers generally stopped blacks at higher rates than whites. In recent years high-profile police shootings of black men have also raised fears of law enforcement among African Americans."

metmike: This article was written by a complete XXXXX at CNN.

Look at the picture above and tell us which  of the people might get racially profiled based on the change that wearing a mask is causing to their appearance??

If half the population, white and black are wearing masks, following the recent advice of the CDC(which they claim is insensitive to blacks) then wearing a mask actually makes at risk blacks............LOOK MORE LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE!!!!

A black man wearing a mask in 2019 when nobody else was?

Yeah, that might cause him  to be  subjected to being stereotyped by some (racist type) people.

A black man wearing a mask during and after the Coronavirus pandemic that's killing tens of thousands of people in 2020?

Many more people will be afraid of him for NOT wearing a mask because of the threat that he might have the Coronavirus and is irresponsibly shedding his contagious virus microbes into the air!!!!!

I copied this from an email that I sent to my family and the format came out weird.

This is  true and very sad.
Most importantly, they live in the high population density urban centers that are being hit the worst.

Wayne county Michigan is the perfect example. 40.5% of the residents are black. Wayne county also has almost half of the COVID-19 cases in MI and actually has more COVID cases than over 40 states do for the entire state. So  alot of blacks.
The 59.5% of poor whites living in Wayne county are succumbing at the same rate too.

With the Coronavirus, the main factors are living in a high population area(in the Northern Hemisphere), health, age and with regards to jobs, working away from the home. Blacks live more in urban areas in the US with this being the main factor.
However, as it turns out, globally, since the US black population is small, blacks are being LESS effected by the virus......because its not bad in places like Africa.

However, I look at it similar to malaria.  It's not your race but where you live that matters.

Malaria is a parasite that effects billions of people around the world and we don't think about much because the US does not have it but you will be shocked to learn about it right now. Whether you get it or not depends on where you live. If there ever was a disease that hit more blacks than whites it is malaria because its so bad in Africa(which is mostly black). Many more black people by at least an order of magnitude will die from malaria this year and every other year than that die from COVID-19.
So in the US, blacks live in a place where everybody, white and black get COVID-19 at the highest rates. In Africa, poor whites and blacks get malaria at the same rate but Africa is almost ALL poor blacks. Bad for blacks to have the misfortune of living where infected mosquitoes live.

Globally, I am much, much more concerned about the hundreds of thousands of blacks being killed by malaria, mostly children than I am the fact that a higher % of blacks get COVID-19 because they live in big cities. Our actions to treat and beat COVID-19 are applied with gusto regardless of race.
I am not trying to downplay this huge disaster but if you live in Africa(1 heck of a huge country) this is your life and worse.............every year.

Key facts

  • Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. It is preventable and curable.
  • In 2018, there were an estimated 228 million cases of malaria worldwide.
  • The estimated number of malaria deaths stood at 405 000 in 2018.
  • Children aged under 5 years are the most vulnerable group affected by malaria; in 2018, they accounted for 67% (272 000) of all malaria deaths worldwide.
  • The WHO African Region carries a disproportionately high share of the global malaria burden. In 2018, the region was home to 93% of malaria cases and 94% of malaria deaths.
  • Total funding for malaria control and elimination reached an estimated US$ 2.7 billion in 2018. Contributions from governments of endemic countries amounted to US$ 900 million, representing 30% of total funding.

Malaria - World Health Organization
Malaria is caused by Plasmodium parasites. The parasites are spread to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes, called "malaria vectors." There are 5 parasite species that cause malaria in humans, and 2 of these species – P. falciparum and P. vivax – pose the greatest threat. In 2018, P. falciparum accounted for 99.7% of estimated malaria cases in the WHO African ...

So I mentioned the malaria connection in Kenya to her earlier today.

"Calvin probably knows a great deal about malaria.
Out of a country of 51 million people, 3.5 million get malaria in a typical year and 10,700 die from it."

This was her response:

"Calvin won an award at the end of his first track season at St. Mary’s for best excuse not to run.  He had told the coach he had Malaria."
