Leftists and Free speech..

The leftist treatment of free speech is a recurring theme throughout the history of leftism.

In the early days, leftists will insist on free speech as a basic right. They will stretch that right up to it's logical, and perhaps illogical limits.  And those who truly believe in basic rights, including freedom of speech, will grudgingly admit that even as ridiculous as those excessive limits may be,  they are within the limits of the freedoms they hold so dear.

But, as the leftists gain power, free speech becomes a problem.  So,  gradually,  free speech starts getting shut down. Conservative Speakers at leftist campuses are denied entry.  Conservative ideas are suddenly banned from assorted internet sites.  Any ideas that are contrary to leftism in public are labeled as hate speech. Eventually, anyone who disagrees with leftist thinking is labeled as a Nazi, White Nationalist, Racist, Homophobe, Xenophobe.

The next steps include book burning and much much worse.

Ironically,  freedom is the most formidable tool of the leftist.

You sound as deranged as the Rump. Now I understand your affinity for him.

That was very well put, Tim.

I lived in the SF Bay Area for two years in the mid 60s.  I personally remember well how they were demonstrating for free speech in Berkeley at that time.  And, yes, they pushed the limits very hard.  Now, the same Left, the same spot in the country, is pushing very hard to not allow free speech.  Of course, now they own the colleges/universities, whereas back in the 60s, it was not that way.

I moved from the Bay Area in the late 60s to Alaska.  I went from working for Lockheed (government money) to working in oil exploration (winters) and guiding (summers).  What a refreshing difference!

Interesting, isn't it, how these things repeat time after time?  Even when very recent history is available that shows where that road leads?

Tim, as a wise Justice once said, free speech does not include shouting "fire" in a crowded theater.

Absolutely Carl.  Do you equate describing the massive failures of socialism to yelling fire in a crowded theater?

By the way,  yelling "Fire" in a theater if there is actually a fire is practically a duty.

Tim, IMHO, I equate the massive failure of communism to the eventual failure of capitalism, due to greed.

(Carl, what are you doing here in an opinion thread ?)

Failures of capitalism due to greed?  I don't think I can equate that to yelling fire In a  theater, and I would never try to suppress your right to make the claim, in spite of it's obvious flaws.  I can point to several historic examples of the failures of socialism/communism,  but I'd have trouble doing the same with capitalism.

Crony capitalism is another story.  It has the same basic inherent flaw as socialism and communism in that the government decides on the winners and losers, ultimately the distribution of goods and services..

Capitalism controls for greed.  If you sell a product at excessive profit,  I'll be willing to provide the same product for a little less.  Unless, of course,  you have a friend in government who comes up with some sort of regulation that makes it difficult or impossible for me to do so.  But then,  we are back to crony capitalism.

Of course, we are digressing from the point of the IP.  Not that that's unusual here in forum land.

It's rare to see suppression of free speech in a capitalist society.  It's the norm in a leftist one.

Comey got subpoenaed and WANTS TO SPEAK FREELY IN AN OPEN HEARING. Will the ReTrumplicans allow him to do this? It's "Truth of Dare time" again folks.

Oh, cliffe, try to think about this a bit more than Comey and the MSM want you to.  What the committee wants to ask Comey about is classified.  In a public hearing, all he has to say is that he cannot comment because it is classified.

A public hearing is merely a delaying tactic.

Nothing is ever as simple as what they feed you, cliffe.

Well cfdr, let me ask what you think of Rump not wanting to talk to Mueller. What do you think that is all about?

Mojo, this has already been discussed in detail.  It's called a perjury trap, and as much as Trump would like to answer all questions, the President's lawyers have convinced him that it is a bad idea - when the "request" is not done in good faith.  It has nothing to do with actual guilt or innocence.  When dealing with someone like Robert Mueller and his crew of lawyers out to destroy Donald Trump, using any means possible, it is just a dumb thing to do.

So in other words, if he tells the truth he will be confessing to crimes committed & if he lies he'll be committing perjury. It seems as though Mueller has him pretty well boxed in, wouldn't you say?

yes really quite typical behavior for a snake like Comey...I want to testify in public, they get the snake in public and they get "As much as I want to answer. I cannot in a public setting" that song has been played by the Clinton defenders way too long
