Today is the 89th anniversary of "Black Thursday" which kicked off the 1929 collapse. The Dow dropped 11%, the equivalent of 2750 pts today.

My father was a runner on Wall Street and actually saw someone jump from the top of one of the buildings and saw other bodies in the street.

1929 – "Black Thursday" stock market crash on the New York Stock Exchange.

In the same vein:

2008 – "Bloody Friday" saw many of the world's stock exchanges experience the worst declines in their history, with drops of around 10% in most indices.

In my field:

2005Hurricane Wilma makes landfall in Florida resulting in 35 direct and 26 indirect fatalities and causing $20.6B USD in damage.
