I posted some time ago about the threat of Iranian speed boats in the Strait of Hormos

This was pooh poohed by the forum

Well: Go to Briebart news under national security and see for yourself the USA aircraft carrier fleeing from Iranian speed boats

I don't know how to post the link, but it has been in the news all weekend that I know about

Can anybody expand on the reason why the aircraft stood down.

Embarassment does not even come close to describing the event. Must be more to the story

Reminds me of the years I spent in Alaska.  It was said that if a bear and a wolverine met on a trail, the bear would give way.  It wasn't that the bear would lose the fight - it was just that the bear had better sense.

Not sure why they chose not to engage,  but a couple, or even a few dozen speed boats would be no match for a carrier group.   The helicopters alone would make short work of them.  Forget the f-18's, assorted destroyers, etc. etc.

I don't know how anybody could get the impression that the carrier was "fleeing". When flies follow a garbage truck, you don't call the truck "fleeing"

This is international waters, and they have the right to buzz around with their speed boats. If they get too close, warning shots are fired.

On the other hand, you are quite right. Such a speed boat could carry a torpedo. Carriers are vulnerable, in spite of their helicopters and destroyer escorts.

That last article is interesting

My take is it can mean anything, at any given time. War pretty much nullifies any peace time agreements.

Now we know, for a fact, that the USA wants to suppress Iranian oil exports to zero if possible, or as close to zero as possible.

So: would not Iran be forced to do something. Let's face it. Stop the supply of money from oil sales and Iran is desperate. Desperate times call for desperate actions. I don't know about you but Iran can build many more small speed boats than USA can build carriers and supporting task force vessels as a shield for the air craft carrier.

Those speed boats looked to me as if they were close enough to launch a good sized missile and do considerable damage to an air crat carrier Multiply that by 10 - 20 -50 what ever and you have a big problem. Have you ever struck a hornets nest by mistake???

You are bigger but the hornets can make you run for safety.

Plus as mentioned in the article, why not lay mines across the narrow 21 mile part. Yes the carrier or escorts could blow the speed boats out of the water, but do those boats crew persons have a choice when ordered to do a suicide attack. Get out alive and be a hero back home. Plus a good dose of drugs helps make you feel invinsible

Looks to me like a messy situation, not to mention SPV [whatever that means] to by pass settlements of oil purchases, in something other than USD. China, Russia, Iran and possibly part of the EU seem to approve of SPV as a method to pay the bills. SPV could very well work from what I have read. The hope is more countries would agree to use SPV although when India backed down that was a big disappointment.

Interesting developments. Richard might be correct with soaring crude prices

Mean while Trump is consumed with making big trade deals. He better keep his eye on foreign war powers, jockeying for advantageous positions, not just domestic issues, or maybe oil might be the international tinder box, nobody suspected.

I am probably all wrong, as I go out on a limb again, per usual.

You've got that right!!!!

Consumed with meaningless tweeting wars with meaningless opponents, consumed with fulfilling his campaign promises, such as getting the US out of bad deals (such as the old NAFTA), making the economy better, cutting down unemployment, etc etc

Maybe, he is not focusing enough on Iran.

Just think...... the People made their choice in 2016, and they chose Trump. What would the world be like today, had Hillary won????

Well, I didn't hear her make many significant promises, but I do remember a very important video.......specifically of interest for the subject of this discussion. She clearly stated that she would "not hesitate to make a preemptive nuclear strike"

Quite likely, the missiles would have already been flying in 2017.....nuclear WW3, and the end of our civilization. We would not be having this discussion today.... we would already be fried to a crisp.... or, if you live in a rural area, you'd watching mushroom clouds over all big cities.

With that in mind, I don't mind having the "racist, narcissist, islamophobic, rich bigot", as some people call him, in the WH
