There’s another phase of the eclipse not listed on the chart above called the penumbral eclipse, which starts about an hour before the partial eclipse begins and ends an hour after the partial eclipse concludes. This phase of the eclipse is more subtle. It happens when the moon moves through the outer part of Earth’s shadow, or its penumbra.

The view gets better as the moon moves into the umbra, or the main part of the Earth’s shadow. That will start at around 10:30 p.m. Eastern Time during the partial eclipse phase.

Finally, when the eclipse is at maximum, nearly all of the moon will be covered by Earth’s shadow, scattering blue light waves and turning the moon red.

Not everyone will get the same view of the eclipse. Those in time zones further east will likely have a better view as the moon will be higher up in the sky.
