I just read more about what the word, “settler”, means:
-it refers to someone who migrates to another place to settle down there for prospects of a better life often due to the place they came from no longer being or never having been a place allowing for a high quality life in that person’s mind. “The grass is greener on the other side” kind of thing.
-But unfortunately, whereas that sounds like a good reason to migrate, settler groups often end up clashing violently with the native people of where they moved to due to them not tolerating these new folks and/or the new folks not tolerating the natives. Racism could be involved on both sides.
-Whereas I used to think of the term “settler” or “colonist” as having a positive connotation, I now see that that often is not the case when I think about the displacement of or violence toward natives that’s often involved. How is that fair to the natives? But then again, did the then current natives at one time replace the prior natives in their area?
Should Americans who aren’t descended from Native Americans feel bad? Do we deserve to be here? Then again, just how native are Native Americans? Maybe they replaced other groups way back when?
