What is Memorial Day? Facts, Meaning, and History

What can I say instead of “Happy Memorial Day?"
Memorial Day is a time to remember and honor service members who made the ultimate sacrifice.

On Memorial Day, it's important to remember we are honoring our fallen. For many, this day is not a happy occasion but a solemn one. Here is some guidance on the appropriate messages to convey:

  • Rather than “Happy Memorial Day,” say something like “Have a meaningful Memorial Day.”
    • It’s also not appropriate to thank a service member for their service on this day, as it is a day for remembering and honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
  • Take a moment to recognize and remember. You can even say, “Today and always, I’m remembering [name].”

Remember to speak from the heart and with sincerity, acknowledging the significance of the day and the sacrifices made by those we honor.

The Best Way to Honor Fallen Soldiers Is to Stop Sending Troops to War

Monday, May 27, 2019

While honoring the troops on Memorial Day is a heartfelt and respectful endeavor, we must do so by protecting those who have not yet sacrificed their lives.

Scaling back the size and scope of military programs is not only respectful to troops but also a necessary measure to preserve liberty and freedom.

Ron Paul—a powerful voice for peace—received markedly more contributions from members of the military than any other candidate.

Trump: Americans Who Died in War Are ‘Losers’ and ‘Suckers’

Sorry to bring in politics. I actually did not like McCain POLITICALLY(mainly because I wanted us out of the Iraq war/quagmire and he campaigned in 2008 on staying until the job is done-which would have been forever!)  but totally respected and admired his patriotic position and willingness to risk his life for our country which is what Memorial Day is all about.

However, on this special day,  I am defending John McCain and all the other BRAVE soldiers that served our country and were casualties, whether it was in Vietnam (when our government dumped Agent Orange on them that damaged them for life and they came back to fellow Americans that trashed them, instead of honoring them) or in wars where they were seen as hero's.

The current president is USING them to accomplish his agenda not because he cares about them.

They are not human beings with families to Donald Trump. Just pawns or units that are expendable to accomplish his agenda

We should remember the humanity of our soldiers and their families on Memorial Day. If we did not lose a father or brother or son or daughter or best friend that died as brave soldiers, then we might not understand the losses of those that did.

The death of each and every brave soldier negatively impacts countless others around them. We should maximize the meaning of those deaths by exposing our brave soldiers to harms way/risks that are justified by virtue of the worthwhile cause.

Hey Mike,

I think happy Memorial Day is ok because it’s good to be happy as often as possible. We can remember our killed soldiers, still be happy, and it not be cold.  Most of them would want us to be happy for the freedom we have because of their defending our freedom.

Alternatives though: “Happy Memorial Day weekend and remember our heroes.”

Or have a meaningful Memorial Day.

I agree with that, Larry!

I  think people saying "Happy Memorial Day" can also have the sincere mindset of honoring the purpose of this holiday.

Using the phrase, "Have a meaningful Memorial Day" is actually awkward/odd sounding.
