This was my favorite throw in MLB history!
WS1968 Gm5: Horton gets Brock at the plate
Willie Horton's throw to nail Lou Brock at home plate was game 5 of the World Series with St.Louis with the Tigers down 3 games to 1 going into that game.
It started their amazing come back to win the last 3 games!!!
Just a couple of weeks before that, my dad took me to this game at Tiger Stadium. We were in the right field bleachers.
We went to see Mickey Mantle's last game at Tiger Stadium, not to see Denny McLain. It was a huge deal that year for McLain to win 30 games. First one to do that in over 3 decades and last ever.
The game for him to win 30 was the biggest sports event of the regular baseball season in many years. After that, however he had 2 or 3 more starts that season and everybody assumed that he would win at least 33. Turns out that his last win, #31 was the game we went to. Turns out too that what Denny McLain did for Mickey Mantle made it even more extraordinarily unusual.
