Trump deploys National Guard to D.C., takes control of local police in crime crackdown

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-to-hold-news-conference-on-d-c-crime-amid-federal-takeover-threat/

Washington — President Trump said Monday that he is deploying members of the National Guard to Washington, D.C., and that the federal government has taken control of the D.C. police as part of a push to crack down on crime in the nation's capital, despite data showing crime has declined in the city in recent years.

"I'm announcing a historic action to rescue our nation's capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam and squalor and worse," Mr. Trump said at a news conference at the White House. "This is liberation day in D.C., and we're going to take our capital back."

My educated guess/speculation is that Trump KNOWS that crime has plunged in DC for reasons that have nothing to do with him but he wants to take credit for it.

You watch. He will manipulate(lie) the statistics to compare crime after he does this and compare it  to crime at some point in the past, when it was higher and insist his crack down on crime caused it. His schemes have become so predictable and so self serving.

What a waste of tax payers money and focus on a NON problem to deflect away from all the real problems, some of which he is causing and some are getting worse.  His tariffs schemes are a delusional,  1 man wrecking ball that can't help but cause tremendous, widespread damage.

This is an entirely self serving PR stunt, abusing his power once again to use a federal agency in a way not intended with another galactic display of bad judgment when applying the use of  our countries resources.

It's only been 7 months and this  chaotic, counter productive, authoritarianism by our president without our R Congress challenging him and providing a bit of sanity has created a blatant IMbalance of power.

That would not be as bad........if this authoritarian had not lost his mind

My guess is this is just a dry run to set a precedent for future police state deployment, probably  some crisis that is self inflicted by Trump.

Thanks, joj!

With this guy and his completely loony talking and actions, one disappointing surprise after another...   we can't rule out anything.

Maybe you'll be right!

I think that  a big  underlying driving  force  for many of President Trumps decisions Is the amount of control it allows him to  exert which defines his decision making.

Not smart  reasoning  based on legit facts that lead to improvements  in that  realm but  instead, just opportunities to apply pathological control  as the omnipotent, most powerful man in the world.

This could also be part of his attempt to take the focus away from his spiraling out of control Epstein-gate and tariffs disasters.

just when did Mm join a MSM fake news company. Over and over he claims he will tell the good and the bad. This is another fine example. Tariff disaster. MM has predicted the end of western civilization because of Trump and yet just this week Trump has a meet with Putin on tap, settled 2 more wars and inflation comes in at point 2...yes point 2. And all that does is prove once again what a hose job Powell is giving Trump and all Americans by holding these interest rates for political reasons. Something like 675 m cost to tax payers so Powell can be so stupid and childish.

It doesn't matter what they do in DC as far as arrest they need to do something about the crazy city counsel and judges. They could show 800 arrest in one night but what does it matter if they are out the next day. Unless of course they charge them Federally . Would be interesting to see how many actually do any time.

Thanks very much, jmk!

Related to your comment. I think the people who are the biggest criminals, by far doing the most harm are our ethnically bankrupt politicians that live in DC.

They have a million times more power than common criminals and homeless people(the later that deserves empathy and assistance). They touch millions of lives and are most concerned with self enrichment and maintaining their power.

Trump steps up clash with DC, Democratic-led cities

https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/5447093-trump-dc-democratic-cities-chicago/

The president’s comments came at the same press conference where his FBI director, Kash Patel, touted that the murder rate was on pace to be the lowest in modern history.

“He was just getting warmed up in Los Angeles,” Newsom posted on X. “He will gaslight his way into militarizing any city he wants in America. This is what dictators do.”

The administration also pointed to the volume of crimes reported thus far in 2025, despite statistics showing it has dropped year to year.

Trump's takeover 'out of touch' with facts on the ground, says D.C. attorney general

mcfarm,

If you want me to report positive things about Trump, then our president needs to do positive things. It's that simple. This isn't Fox News.

You're encouraged to continue to  help me out to find those positive things as one of President Trump's cheerleaders. If they are valid, I will spent time highlighting them.. If attacks on him are unfair, I will highlight that too.

Things have  been getting pretty one sided here recently. I haven't suddenly changed a thing.  I'm still not a D. I still don't have TDS and don't hate Trump.

But Trump is our president now and his decision making justifies objective coverage, good or bad.

Again, nobody is stifling you, disrespecting you or attacking you(you are still my friend), which is much better treatment than Mr. Trump would give you here if you didn't agree completely with his messaging.

+++++++++++++

In watching Fox tonight, I can understand why you feel this way, mcfarm. I do watch Fox on a regular basis. NOT to find out what to think and hear things I want to be true but to try to understand why people that watch Fox think the way they do and what drives Fox in the evening.

It's not to tell the truth but instead is to maximize ratings.

I will add that its good to reduce crime for the citizens of any community, including D.C. Even with its drop in the crime rate recently, D.C. still has plenty of crime.

So that's a positive.

But the question is whether it suddenly justifies an emergency because 1 person decides its an emergency and they bring in the National Guard.

The same person who has spent much of the past 7 months practicing over reach, sometime extreme over reach.

With NO consultation or heads up for the law enforcement leaders in DC. Just like he forced the National Guard on authorities in California, despite them objecting. How can entities work together on anything when 1 of them is opposing the other one.

It's not a matter of who is right and who is wrong. It's respecting people in that jurisdiction by working with them.

What Trump did with the National Guard in California likely did more damage overall than good because he violates protocol and respect of other people.

If you have a common goal, you do things to unite. Communicate. Be transparent. Respect each other.

Trump is anti uniting, anti transparent/communication, ANTI respectful.

He decides what makes him look best and goes for it, regardless of advice from others. If they disagree or come out with stats he doesn't like he does this:

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/nuzUtA2PL1E

He hires/appoints his friends and those that did favors for him, helped elect him and that profess loyalty to Donald Trump and not to the Constitution, science or the American people.

Who would ever hire 21 people from an extreme, far right tv network for key government jobs that serve ALL Americans, more than half of which are NOT republicans?

All 21 Fox News Personalities, Contributors Who Have Joined the 2nd Trump Administration

https://www.yahoo.com/news/21-fox-news-personalities-contributors-221718333.html

Then he fills all positions with people that he knows will have their #1 priority being this: Fulfill all of Donald Trumps wishes, never disagree with him and constantly tell the world how great Donald Trump is.

Trump's approval rating drops to second-term low as support from independents craters

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2025/07/25/trump-approval-rating-low-gallup-independents/85375721007/

Only 29% of independent voters said they approved of Trump's job performance, a 17-point decline from the 46% the president enjoyed among independents at the start of his second term. The 29% approval rating among independent voters is the lowest Gallup has tracked with the group in either of his two terms.

Trump has maintained strong support from Republican voters ‒ dropping just one point from 90% in January to 89% ‒ while backing from Democratic voters has slid from 6% to 2%.

Although Trump's "Big, Beautiful Bill" legislation marked a major legislative victory for the president, a CNN poll conducted by SSRS this month found 61% of Americans opposed the megabill, which includes cuts to Medicaid and food stamps and an extension of Trump's 2017 tax cuts estimated to add $3.3 trillion to the debt over 10 years.

Trump has also lost support on his handling of most issues. Only 37% of Americans approved of his handling of the economy in July, down from 42% in Gallup's February poll. Trump's favorability rating on immigration decreased from 46% to 38%, his handling of foreign trade from 42% to 36%, his handling of foreign affairs from 44% to 41%, and his handling of the Middle East from 40% to 36%.

Trump is supposedly all about removing government controls on the citizens of the United States and allowing capitalism and free trade, not government dominating the rules of everything and penalizing companies and consumers with expensive regulations.

This administration claims:

Fact Sheet: President Donald J. Trump Reduces the Federal Bureaucracy

The White House

https://www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/2025/02/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-reduces-the-federal-bureaucracy/

"REDUCING GOVERNMENT OVERREACH: President Trump’s Executive Order is consistent with his Administration’s policy to dramatically reduce the size of the Federal Government, while increasing its accountability to the American people."

His tariffs schemes are the biggest government controlled, ANTI free trade ANTI capitalism policy by our government in the last century!

Government overreach on steroids!!

++++++++++++++

The reality is that Trump is reducing government overreach of things that he doesn't like(so that he can control them personally to some extent)  but INCREDIBLY increasing government overreach, in fact to much more damaging levels in realms that give him, Donald Trump the power of the government to wield however he decides.

Taking over the National Guard with his governmental emergency powers as president and using it for his, Donald Trump,  Federal government overreach defined law enforcement tool that literally, steals control of law enforcement from the hands of local law enforcement in Los Angeles and D.C(with them vehemently objecting and trying to stop him)  for entirely political reasons is the quintessential example of blatant abuse of  extreme governmental overreach, using it as a political weapon.
