mike , wx

I have a weather station that registered .73 in, first rain gage 1.1 in

a friend has 1 gage reads .8in.

 2nd gage reads 1.0 in

why the difference in 2 gages close together?

I'VE NOTICED SOME PRETTY WIDE VARIANCE IN THE STATIONS AROUND ME.

I HAVE NOTHING BUT A USA MADE GLASS TUBE.  SOMETIMES, A STATION 1/4 MILE FROM ME WAS SPOT ON WITH MINE.... SOMETIMES NOT.  I ALWAYS BELIEVE MINE...IT'S MECHANICAL & NOT "TECHANICAL".

I'VE THOUGHT OF GETTING A STATION, BUT... THEY GO OFF LINE PRETTY OFTEN AROUND ME.  THE ONE A 1/4 MILE FROM ME?  HE FINALLY GOT TIRED OF IT GOIN' OFF LINE SO OFTEN... HE TOOK IT DOWN.

Thanks, cutworm!

Since you don't provide any information other than 2 rain gauges with 2 different readings on the same property, I'm left to wild guess.

Are they the same type?

You gave me a great idea though.

I use a cheap plastic, 1 piece rain gauge in the backyard. An agronomist friend that worked for a major seed company as a salesman got a new job 25 years ago. He had a huge box of rain gauges that he gave to farmers and clients when selling that he wouldn't be using anymore.

I still have more than 20 left.  I'll put up several around the property and see how close they are.

With regards to mcfarm's statement.

1/4 mile can make a huge difference in the amount of thunderstorm/convective type rains.

What is a Rain Gauge? Types, Use Cases, and Why They Matter

https://www.maximum-inc.com/learning-center/what-are-the-different-type-of-rain-gauges/

1. The Standard Rain Gauge

2. The Tipping Bucket Rain Gauge

3. The Weighing Rain Gauge

The universal weighing rain gauge is optimal for climatology use. This is because of a vacuum that accounts for the effects of wind, allowing more rain to enter the gauge. These gauges are very precise in measuring rainfall intensity as the weighing mechanism at the bottom of the collector can be used to measure depth and time simultaneously. Recording is carried out much in the same way as the older versions of the tipping bucket gauges.

I'm thinking that this type of rain gauge is more accurate than mine, which is just 1 plastic tube. I had one like this 30 years ago.
