Thanks for tipping us off about this critical issue, Jean!

The recent El Nino is favorable for drought in this area, which is fed by a fresh water lake.

Drought in Panama is disrupting global shipping. These 7 graphics show how.

The last article and others want to blame climate change for this low water.

Historical levels of this lake always drop during natural El Nino's. We are just ending another NATURAL El Nino that caused it again this time!

So all the other times, it happened from natural El Nino's but we're supposed to believe that THIS time was from the climate crisis?

Here's a study done in 2003. Note no trend in rainfall except for spikes much lower during El Nino's!

It's time to repeat this again:

This can’t be repeated enough and applies to all the other similar extreme weather situations the last 2 decades of people cherry picking extremes to blame on climate change.

Cliff Mass can be counted on as an elite source for using objective, authentic science:

https://cliffmass.blogspot.com/2016/03/the-golden-rule-of-climate-extremes.html

The GoldenRule
“Considering the substantial confusion in the media about this critical issue, let me provide the GOLDENRULE OF CLIMATE EXTREMES”

Here it is:
“The more extreme a climate or weather record is, the greater the contribution of natural variability.”
“Or to put it a different way, the larger or more unusual an extreme, the higher proportion of the extreme is due to natural variability.

The Panama Canal may dry up because of Amazon deforestation

https://www.piie.com/blogs/realtime-economics/2024/panama-canal-may-dry-because-amazon-deforestation

With regards to their statement that the rain forest not taking carbon out of the air which in turn causes these droughts............bull.

However, the rain forest can alter weather patterns for sure over the regions surrounding the rain forest...........the Panama Canal is not even close to that.

And the Panama Canal is surrounded by tons of water. The Pacific Ocean, especially on one side is a huge moisture source and the Caribbean Sea on the other. The amount of moisture that the rain forest contributes to weather systems over the Panama Canal isn't diddly squat!

++++++++++++++++

Here's the rainfall for Panama going back 100 years(thru 2019). There is no climate change fingerprint downward trend as they claim!

1970, 1975 and 1981 were especially wet years, fairly close together but other than that, there's no trend and nothing stands out.

This current dry spell is mostly caused by natural variation based on the golden rule of climate/weather extremes.

There's alot more going on here related to use of the water by the local population:

A new model suggests reforestation could be detrimental to water resources in the Panama Canal. Smithsonian scientists warn of flawed methodology and emphasize case for long-term monitoring.

INTERESTING STUFF, MIKE ~ THANKS!!

ISN'T CHINA IN CONTROL OF THE CANAL? IF MEMORY SERVES ME CORRECTLY... DIDN'T THEY USED TO CHANGE COUNTRIES EVERY 10 YEARS? THEN, WHEN CHINAS' 10 YEAR STINT WAS UP, THEY EXTENDED THEIR STINT ANOTHER 10 YEARS, OR SO?  I THINK BUSH WAS IN OFFICE AT THAT TIME.

Thanks, Jean!

I'm really glad that you started this thread because my knowledge on the Panama Canal was very limited and its good to learn more, then share it here.

I still don't know enough to answer your question, though.
