The backdrop entering the match was political tensions between the two nations, which were inflamed when the US Soccer Federation published social media posts with an altered version of Iran’s flag — a gesture intended to support ongoing protests for women’s rights in Iran.
I always root for the USA in any international competition. And I am pulling for the USA in this year's World Cup.
But I couldn't help myself feeling for the young men from the Iran team. They showed solidarity with the protesters by not singing during the Iranian national anthem. That took a lot of courage. And then to lose to the US team. I wouldn't want to be in their shoes heading home to that oppressive regime.
