https://talk.newagtalk.com/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=1008263&mid=9106600#M9106600    notice the large drops in Illinois. Normally you would think tough drought, No, these drops are from too much water and crops going backwards. Indiana either was not estimated or will have a large drop next week. There are large areas with huge crop damage here. The crops in these areas that still have a chance are not growing, have lost color {nutrients} nave been hurt. Of course the gravel or sand ground can  take more and survive.

Thanks mcfarm for the backyard look.

The overall US corn crop improved 1% last week.

MM, backyard? One of the nations largest producing states lost several points, Illinois. How they did not lower Indiana is a mystery that will be solved next week. It should come in lower by several points.

I am not disagreeing with you mcfarm and very much appreciate your views and would like much like more of that here by our other producers but the market will go with the thousands of farmers in the USDA crop condition report.

It would be great if other producers added to your thoughts based on what they have going on or know of.

We recently made a loop from here in NW Iowa west to western South Dakota, north to Montana then back across North Dakota and finally returning by way of western Minnesota.

The big take away was the variability we saw, even to the point of a couple miles making the difference between a farmer cutting wheat for hay and another field looking like it would make something.

One thing that really stood out is that from all our travels in that trip and previous  trips is that I saw not one acre that didn’t get planted. In South Dakota there were many places that looked to be sloughs that had either been cut for hay or had corn on them.

We are still hand to mouth for moisture. The rain event later this week may spell the difference between a very, very good crop and a below average one. I think this is the pivotal week for us.

Corn will be pollinating next week and the beans will be in their rapid growth phase. Some locales around here caught an inch or more last week and they look to be set up for a tremendous crop.

We received a nice two inches over 12 hours, mostly done now but still maybe a little to come.

Hay cutting tomorrow and into Saturday.

This should set us up for the next two weeks in pretty good shape, a critical time for the corn.

With the dry earlier the ear size may have been reduced, time will tell. Even if it has been, ear fill and test weight will make up for some of the size loss.

Anyway, we can breathe again.
