Dictators and Democracy

In todays world and the past I find very little difference between countries with dictators or Democracies

One thing I find very obviously different:

In a Democracy, the bad things happen with the agreement of the people

Dictators decide all by themselves

Consider slavery, burning at the stake, locked up hand and foot in the village square, segregation of the classes of people, very poor people and very rich people, living in the same country, a justice system that is constantly changing, taking of money or property by force, the use of deadly force against groups of people gathered to do a bit of talking,  laws for the rich and powerful, different laws for the peons, being forced  to fight and die for the ruling class

Why do we think the world should  live by these rules

I am sure you can think of a good reason, so maybe I need to be educated
