From the Chicago Tribune:

Jussie Smollett gets off scot-free

"The Chicago State's Attorney has dropped all charges against former Empire star Jussie Smollett who made up a story of a racist attack. Totally fabricated. It is a travesty of justice."

What happened in court:

"Cook County prosecutors on Tuesday dropped all charges against "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett for allegedly staging an attack and claiming he was the victim of a hate crime. Prosecutors did not detail in court why they were dropping the charges but issued a statement afterward.

“After reviewing all of the facts and circumstances of the case, including Mr. Smollett’s volunteer service in the community and agreement to forfeit his bond to the City of Chicago, we believe this outcome is a just disposition and appropriate resolution to this case,” the statement said."

City of Chicago Will Sue Actor For Cost of Investigating 'Attack'

https://www.tmz.com/2019/04/04/jussie-smollett-city-of-chicago-lawsuit-sue-attack/

"the City of Chicago fired off a letter to Jussie's people, demanding $130,000 for the cost of investigating the case. Jussie's people told the City to go pound sand.

The City had to wait 7 days before filing a civil lawsuit against the actor. Well the 7 days has now passed, and the City has made its intentions clear -- they are going forward with the lawsuit."

Demand Letter:

"The stakes are high for Jussie ... the City can ask for 3 times the actual cost of investigation ... $390,000.

In addition, in order to win, the City must prove that it's more likely than not that Jussie faked the "attack." This, in effect, puts Jussie on trial before an administrative law judge.

As you know, the State's Attorney dropped the criminal case against Jussie where he faced 16 felony counts."

Jussie Smollett Case Outcome Raises Questions of Celebrity Justice

https://variety.com/2019/tv/news/jussie-smollett-case-outcome-celebrity-justice-1203177982/

"In a restorative justice framework, Smollett would have to make some gesture of apology and atonement. Instead, he has been allowed to proclaim his innocence.
“This wasn’t a full restorative process,” said Elena Quintana, an expert who monitors and evaluates the Chicago restorative justice court. “It would have been better if he had been fully accountable. If he did set up [the attack], that’s a crappy thing to do, and he should be held accountable in proportion to the harm that was created.”
