Corn beef and cabbage is only a traditional Irish custom in the United States. After the potato famine and the Irish move here in large numbers, they were mostly poor and had to live in Jewish tenement neighbors. To celebrate Saint Patricks Day, they were unable to buy the traditional ham at the kosher butchers and had to settle for corn beef.
