1919 – Oregon places a one cent per U.S. gallon tax on gasoline, becoming the first U.S. state to levy a gasoline tax.
1939 – The first of 2 1⁄2 million Anderson air raid shelters appeared in North London.
"Anderson shelters were designed to accommodate up to six people ... Anderson shelters were issued free to all householders who earned less than 5 pounds a week (equivalent to 300 pounds in 2018, when adjusted for inflation). Those with a higher income were charged 7 pounds (430 pounds in 2018) for their shelter. One and a half million shelters of this type were distributed between February 1939 and the outbreak of war. During the war a further 2.1 million were erected."
I'm sure there was a logical reason, but why none for South London ?
"They survived doodlebugs and the Luftwaffe’s air raids. Now, 80 years on, Britain’s remaining air raid shelters host kids’ parties, flowers and foxes. Why are so many people still so fascinated by them?"
