OMG

I feel so stupid

Ive always thought it referred to the number "5".

As in "5 centuries worth" or " 5th".

metmike- Maybe I should start a new thread "Stupid Stuff I Always Thought"!

Bet it would be a long one if people are honest.

WE can also bet on who would be the first(next ) contributor.

OK -- I'll play. I always thought old people's hair turned grey due to cosmic ray bombardment, because my brother told me so when I was a kid in the 1950's. It turns out that hair turns grey "due to a natural buildup of hydrogen peroxide in hair follicles, which causes oxidative stress and graying."

Hey -- wait! Maybe I could just try insisting that the natural buildup of hydrogen peroxide in hair follicles is caused by cosmic ray bombardment!

Gee -- some of these embarrassing beliefs have really simple explanations if you just think about 'em a bit.
