Success vs winning

John Wooden shaped my ideas of practice and doing my best. Practice more difficult circumstances than game conditions provides. If you do the right things over a long enough timeframe then positive results are simply a by product.

I’m forever grateful for him changing my view on winning, my relationship to it and “success”.

I was fortunate enough to have moved to Los Angeles during the Golden Years when the John Wooden legend was created.

Hadn't cared much for Basketball till then, and since I hadn't formed an attachment to any eastern teams, I jumped on the bandwagon and became a Bruin fan.

It's only now, thanks to this thread, that I can fully appreciate John Wooden, the Man.

Some games Wooden would sit in the stands to see if he had done a good job during practice. The team was self directed on the floor. Metaphorically life is better self directed and self determined. He taught life lessons.

The competition is internal, with ourselves, seeking constant improvement to try and reach our best selves. Regardless who is on the “opposing” side.

He set a tone for me in my teens that I still value today. It’s incongruent with excessive capitalistic values where the one with the most toys or biggest bank is the winner.

RIP Sir.
