what's going on with Google?

I use Google Chrome as my main browser. Recently, I have been flooded with pop-up ads, as soon as I turned on 'Chrome. Some of the ads were just advertisements, but the vast majority were breaking-news alerts. Upon closer examination, these news alerts came from 2 sources.... sputniknews and rt.com which stands for Russian Television.

I never googled for anything related to Russia, so how did I become an ardent follower of Russian news?

Is google a secret agent or asset of Russia?

I found a way to block unwanted ads.... just to make sure... don't want to be woken up some morning with a dozen FBI agents knocking down my door.
