Happy Chanuka!

This was written by my niece:

Chanuka, light and resilience.

One Jewish approach that is very obviously a response to trauma, is the feeling that we are always alone. That no one will look out for us and that generally the world keeps turning against us.
The other day I was contemplating the blessing we say over the chanuka candles: “שעשה ניסים לאבותינו; בימים ההם, בזמן הזה.” - That God has been creating miracles for our ancestors; in the past and in the present.
Wow! I thought. This is like the clear-minded response to the traumatized voice. The blessing is basically saying that, no - no matter how hard it gets, we are not alone. And I think about how in the darkest time of the year, in the darkest times in history, my ancestors were still saying these words. So I sure can.
I wish us all a happy chanuka. That even as we forget, we then re-remember that we are never alone. That we never actually were.

That goes for my gentile colleagues at MF.  You are not alone.  Merry Christmas!
