803   – In New Orleans, Spanish representatives officially transfer the Louisiana Territory to a French representative. Just 20 days later, France transfers the same land to the United States as the Louisiana Purchase.


Wow! That was a great deal of land and best deal in history.

1939 – Winter War: Soviet forces cross the Finnish border in several places and bomb Helsinki and several other
 Finnish cities, starting the war.

As a nine year old, I followed the news of the conflict in the NY Daily News or NY Mirror. As reported, the heroic
 Fins seemed to be winning the war, and it was a great shock and disappointment when they lost.

Mike, I though that the Alaska purchase from Russia (collusion !) was a great deal.
