"The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" is a 1976 folk rock ballad written, composed and performed by the Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot to memorialize the sinking of the bulk carrier SS Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior on November 10, 1975.  Lightfoot considered this song to be his finest work.

Thanks, mcfarm!

Yes, he insisted that this was his best song of all!

I hadn't listened to it for years but knowing the anniversary is coming up, played it yesterday and it really choked me up.

As you know, I grew up in Michigan and spend some time on all the Great Lakes.

Every Summer, our parents took me and my 5 younger siblings on 2 week vacations on Lake Michigan or Lake Huron.

Shipwrecks

The 1975 sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald spurred a number of maritime changes

One of the worst Great Lakes shipwrecks in modern history, the freighter sank during an intense storm on Lake Superior that reportedly produced 50-foot waves. The exact cause remains unknown, and the disaster remains in public consciousness today.
